Kerala is otherwise known as God’s own country and is famous for its rolling mountains, landscapes traditions, temples and backwaters. The temple festivals form an important of the rich cultural heritage of India. The vadakkunathan temple is an example for this. It is located in Thrissur Kerala India. The temple is famous for its annual festival called Pooram festival. This town is also called the Cultural Capital of Kerala and is built around a hilltop. From ancient times, the town has played a significant role in the political history of South India. Thrissur, the name is derived from “Tiru-Siva-Perur” which means the town with the name of Lord Shiva. The Pooram festival is held in the Malayalam month of Medam which coincides with the English months of April-May. This festival draws crowds from all over the world. It is celebrated in the premises of the Vadakkunathan temple. The architecture of this temple is an outstanding specimen of Kerala temple architecture. Because of the fame of the festival, the temple is also called Thrissur Pooram temple. During the festival, the deities from the surrounding temples are brought to the venue of the festival. It is believed that the other deities pay their obeisance to the presiding deity of Vadakkunathan. The festivities go on for two days and are marked by the resounding noise of music played in the air by percussionists; the traditional Panchavadyam is played in between two lines of decorated elephants. The fireworks display marks the end of the festivities. It is a spectacular event and is held annually. Apart from this, the town also attracts tourists for the art and archeological museum, the Peechi- Vazhani wildlife sanctuary nearby and the Peechi dam.
